Overview of regulated online casinos in Ontario

As the first province in Canada to regulate online casinos, Ontario set clear standards for fairness, security and transparency. For you, that means a safer, more reliable range of casinos to choose from. Other provinces are starting to follow, with Alberta online casinos having entered a regulated market in July 2026.

🪪 What you’ll need to register at an Ontario online casino

Legal Ontario online casinos require ID verification before you deposit. To make the process smoother, have these handy:

• Photo ID - a driver’s licence or government-issued ID.
• Proof of address - utility bill, bank statement, or government letter.

This is part of the standard KYC (Know Your Customer) process used by regulated Ontario casinos. For faster verification, it often helps to start sign-up on your smartphone, since you can quickly scan documents, use your camera, and complete any required selfie checks in one go.

Do you pay tax on casino winnings in Ontario?

Casino winnings are generally tax-free for Ontario players. Unless gambling is considered your primary source of income, you won’t pay tax on your winnings.

According to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and the Income Tax Folio, online casino winnings and even Lotto Max jackpots, are not taxable – as playing them is merely entertainment and not your profession. The Tax Court of Canada uses these factors to help deem players “professional gamblers”:

• Skill vs luck – whether your winnings are mainly from skill games (think WSOP or WPT poker tournaments) or chance (online casino slots, lotteries like Lotto Max or scratchcards).
• Intent – everyone wants to win, but a professional treats gambling as their job or business, relying on consistent winnings for income rather than playing as a hobby.

If most of your play is casual or fun, you’re generally considered a leisure player, and your winnings are tax-free. For further reading, check out our comprehensive taxation guide.

BetGuard – Ontario’s new self-exclusion program

In May 2026, iGaming Ontario launched BetGuard, a province-wide self-exclusion program for regulated online gambling sites. Through BetGuard.ca, Ontarians can block (for 6 months to five years) to all licensed Ontario online casinos and sportsbooks through one portal instead of self-excluding across individual sites. During that time, licensed ON operators must cease direct marketing communications.

This initiative was years in development and reflects a broader shift toward centralized responsible gambling tools in Canada. Alberta has a similar self-exclusion system tied to its new regulated online gambling market, which includes both online and land-based casinos.
